Scary Land

Scaryland is animated TV series for 6 – 12 year old kids that focuses on adventures of different children who have to confront and overcome their fears. Any irrational and exaggerated fear can take a child to a frightful world of Scaryland.

The captives live in a gloomy Haunted Hostel packed with creepy objects and creatures. They have to work (clean, cook, paint etc.) to get food. The hostel is run by the board of keepers – all fearsome monsters, and is surrounded by eerie lands, inhabited by mysterious creatures from scary stories all over the world.

The only way to escape from Scaryland is to conquer your fear and help other children to survive. Once a child shows courage, he or she is returned to the ordinary world at the same time on the same day he or she was taken away.

Main characters are Runa, Lobo and Ivan – children who don’t want to leave Scaryland. They help new arrivals to adjust and teach them how to survive.

ACT ONE

FADE IN:

EXT. SMALL PARK - DAY

We see the whole picture of the park with green lawns, tall trees and a children’s playground. CLOSE UP on a fir tree with low branches.

THOMAS (V.O.)
Once upon a time there were three
sisters. Their mother told them
never to buy yellow curtains.

Underneath the branches of the tree we see THOMAS(10), ELY(8) and JILLIAN(8) sitting on the ground, their backpacks are lying next to them. Thomas is telling the story in a spooky voice, and Ely and Jillian are listening eyes wide open.

THOMAS
After their mother's death the
girls went to town and saw
beautiful yellow curtains there.
The youngest sister didn't want to
buy the curtains, but the elder
sisters still bought them. At night
the curtains said, "The eldest
sister, wake up." The girl did.
"Girl, make up your bed." The girl
did. "Girl, step on the chair." The
girl did. "Girl, step on the
windowsill."

JILLIAN
Stop it Thomas, don’t say another
word!

Jillian panics and covers her ears.

THOMAS
The girl did and--

Thomas pulls Jillian’s hands off her ears, makes a scary face
and whispers maliciously:

THOMAS (CONT’D)
The curtains strangled the girl.

JILLIAN
I hate you! I hate you!

A creepy SQUEAKING SOUND is heard.

ELY
What was that?

The children look alarmed at each other. The SQUEAKING SOUND repeats. Thomas slowly moves the branch of the tree. Through the opening we have a view of the playground.

THOMAS
It’s just the creaking swing.

ELY
And why is it swinging by itself?

THOMAS
We’ll go and check.

Thomas climbs out from the branches of the tree, Ely and Jillian follow him.

EXT. PLAYGROUND - DAY

The swing is swinging slowly with the creaking sound. Children come closer. Thomas spreads out his hand as if he wants to stop it.

JILLIAN
Don’t touch it, Thomas.

THOMAS
Why?

Thomas grabs the swing, then sits on it. He grins.

THOMAS (CONT’D)
Do you think, it’ll strangle me?

Jillian and Ely see some black haze rising behind the swing, growing in size rapidly, they look terrified, they both SCREAM:

JILLIAN AND ELY
Thomas!

The black tornado lifts all of them in the air, we see them rolling in black haze and SCREAMING for a few moments, and they land harshly on the ground. There’s a complete darkness and silence.

INT. DARK PATHWAY - DAY

With a CLICK two RED EYES open in the darkness and we see children in a vague red light. They rise on their legs and look around, they don’t see the red eyes yet.

JILLIAN
Thomas! Ely! Where are you?

ELY
What is this place?

More red eyes open up all around them.

THOMAS
Everybody run!!!

Children run, pushed by a strong gust of wind and followed by red eyes and horrid SCREECHES.

INT. HAUNTED HOSTEL. BLOODY STAIRS - DAY

Through the opening in the wall children enter the stairs, leading down. It’s dimly lit with oil lamps. Thomas lets Ely and Jillian go first.

THOMAS
Careful, the steps are steep.

ELY
I see somebody there.

TWO CHILDREN in gray robes scrub the stairs few steps down from Ely.

ELY (CONT’D)
What are you doing?

The children look up at them and don’t say anything.

SEPIA (O.S.)
Fou, fou, fou, I smell human.

SEPIA, a tall ugly woman with reptile skin and small black eyes, wearing long medieval dress, nimbly climbs the stairs. She grabs Jillian and Ely with her brown wrinkled hands and hisses:

SEPIA (CONT’D)
New donors? Very handy.

THOMAS
It’s a mistake. We are not donors.
We lost our way--

SEPIA
Did the vampire bats bite you?

She looks at Ely and Jillian closely, turning them all around.

JILLIAN
Vampire bats?

SEPIA
I guess, not. They make everything
so messy.

Jillian looks around and notices brown bloodstains on the walls and on the steps. All the way down children scrub the stairs with the scouring pads.

THOMAS
We need to go home, ma’am. Now,
will you, please, let my friends --

SEPIA
You chat a lot for a smart boy,
Thomas. Follow me, you’ll need your
robes.

Sepia turns, she holds Ely and Jillian by hands. They all go down, and Thomas hurries behind them.

THOMAS
How do you know my name?

SEPIA
Do you like telling scary stories,
Thomas? Do you like frighten small
children?

Sepia cackles menacingly.

SEPIA (CONT’D)
The Collector will be glad to have
you.

Sepia, Jillian, Ely and Thomas stop at the bottom of the stairs. Sepia points to the cart with the folded robes.

SEPIA (CONT’D)
Grab one robe each, boys, and join
the crew. And Jillian will have a
different job to do.

JILLIAN
Oh no, no! I want to stay with
boys. Don’t separate us, please!

SEPIA
You’re washing curtains today.

JILLIAN
I don’t want to wash curtains!

The walls and the floor shake and a distant RUMBLE is heard.

JILLIAN (CONT’D)
What’s that?

SEPIA
That what happens, when you make us
angry. Never question my orders in
Scaryland.

Sepia looks at her, extremely annoyed. CORA(10), a brown-eyed girl with bob haircut, wearing the blue robe, pulls Jillian to her side.

CORA
Come with me. I’m Cora. I’ll show
you around.

END OF ACT ONE

ACT TWO

FADE IN:

INT. HAUNTED HOSTEL. HALLWAY - DAY

Jillian and Cora walk by each other.

CORA
Listen to me, if you want to have
some peace in Scaryland, don’t
attract the staff’s attention. Be
as quiet as a mouse.

JILLIAN
But I don’t want to stay in
Scaryland. I want to go home.

CORA
You’ll only make the things worse.
They’ll punish you, they’ll find
out what’s your worst fear, or send
you to Collector.

JILLIAN
Who’s Collector?

CORA
He’s the Lord of Scaryland. He
collects our fears. His domain
always grows. And he’s omnipresent.

Girls walk to the Laundry Door.

INT. HAUNTED HOSTEL. LAUNDRY - DAY

We see the rows of huge washing and drying machines, humming. Girls in blue robes load the machines with fabric. Jillian and Cora come in, talking.

JILLIAN
That turtle woman knew my name, and
she figured out my fear, I’m sure.

CORA
What’s your fear?

JILLIAN
The yellow curtains.

CORA
(giggles)
You must be joking.

JILLIAN
Hello! The YELLOW curtains. They
kill people.

CORA
Hilarious!

Cora opens the lid of the washing machine. It’s stuffed with beige drapes.

CORA (CONT’D)
Help me take them out. The curtains
are not yellow. They won’t harm
you.

Jillian looks around. She notices a GIANT WHITE BAT with folded wings, hanging from the ceiling upside down. The bat opens up her wings - she has a woman’s face. Jillian shivers. The bat turns into a speedy ghost in a white tunic and darts from above.

ISABELLINA
Hurry up! Hurry up! We have lots of
work today!

Jillian grabs Cora’s hand.

JILLIAN
She’s a ghost!

CORA
You’re a scaredy cat! It’s
Isabellina. Of course, she’s the
ghost. It’s the Haunted Hostel.

ISABELLINA
No talking while you’re working!

Jillian helps Cora to load the basket with washed curtains, and they carry the basket to the dryer. The basket is heavy.

CORA
I do believe that the curtains can
kill you, now.

INT. HAUNTED HOSTEL. IRON ROOM - DAY

There is a long iron board, and five girls are ironing the curtains simultaneously. Jillian is uncomfortable with the iron.

JILLIAN
I’ve never done it before. It’s
hard.

CORA
Don’t press too much.

Jillian puts her iron on the fabric. The fabric wrinkles.

JILLIAN
Oh mine, it was too hot!

Jillian lifts the iron, there’s a burnt hole underneath.

Isabellina darts to the scene. She sees the damage, her face freezes.

ISABELLINA
What have you done, clumsy?

JILLIAN
I’ve been working for the whole
day. I’m tired. It’s mean to make
children work like this!

The walls are shaking again, and a stronger RUMBLE is heard. Girls panic. Isabellina screams:

ISABELLINA
It’s mean not to help your poor
mother to do chores! Lazybones, you
don’t care when someone is doing
all the job for you!

Isabellina leans over Jillian, Jillian shuts her eyes, a tear runs down her cheek.

CORA
Ma’am, please. It’s her first day
here. She’ll learn.

ISABELLINA
One more mistake, and you’ll iron
for the rest of your life.

Isabelinna storms out from the room. Girls resume ironing.

JILLIAN
Thank you.

A terrifying LAUGHING GULLS’ SOUND breaks the silence. Girls stop working.

CORA
Let’s go. It’s dinner time.

INT. HAUNTED HOSTEL. CANTEEN - NIGHT

Jillian and Cora stay in line. Boys in gray uniform put some slimy porridge in children’s plates. CLOWN TAWNY, pale with a cloud of orange hair above his head, weird and cheerful, offers everybody a tray with RED COOKIES. Cora bends to Jillian and whispers:

CORA
Don’t take those.

Jillian shakes her head frantically, when offered the cookies.

CLOWN TAWNY
Are you sure, sugar?

Jillian sits at table with Cora eating her food rapidly. She’s very hungry. Soon her plate is empty. She looks back at Tawny. He waves her.

JILLIAN
So, what’s wrong with the cookies?

CORA
First, you don’t want to know what
they are made from. Second, you’ll
forget things.

Jillian looks at Tawny again; she sees Thomas and Ely, taking the cookies. Jillian jumps from her chair, rushes towards them and knocks out the tray from Tawny’s hands.

JILLIAN
Boys, don’t eat these cookies!

The tray falls on the floor, the cookies break into pieces and crumble all around. We see Thomas and Ely chewing the cookies slowly and staring at Jillian, not recognizing her.

The tables tremble, the cutlery clinks, the floor shakes, and a loud thunder sound reverberates across the hall. Clown Tawny with manic grin shakes his finger.

CLOWN TAWNY
Naughty girl, we don’t throw food
on the floor in the Haunted Hostel.

JILLIAN
I can clean it.

CLOWN TAWNY
You’ve disobeyed our hostel’s rules
for 3 times today. You have to go
to Collector.

JILLIAN
No! Why?

CLOWN TAWNY
And you ask me why!
(he grins)
Let’s go.

Clown Tawny leads Jillian away from the canteen. She looks back at Cora. She is scared. Clown Tawny and Jillian come to the green door. We see a board on it; in golden letters it’s written: “The Lord of Scaryland”. Tawny opens the door, lets Jillian in and shuts the door after her.

EXT. COURTYARD - NIGHT

Jillian breathes a gust of fresh air. It’s dark. A huge bonfire blazes in the middle of the courtyard. The sky above is starry. Jillian makes few steps forward. She walks around the fire, then comes to the wall.

JILLIAN
What’s that?

Jillian touches the wall. It’s made of glass cubes, and there’s some movement inside of every cube. Jillian looks closer: a pale horse, a spider, a wicked witch - all locked in cubes. There are myriads of them.

COLLECTOR (O.S.)
Do you like it?

Jillian looks back startled - behind her stands a tall figure in a medieval silver surcoat. COLLECTOR looks unreal and deadly scary with his long hair black as ebony, and skin white as snow, and lips red as blood. His eyes shine like two emeralds.

JILLIAN
What’s that?

COLLECTOR
My Murky Wall. It runs all around
the Haunted Hostel.

JILLIAN
I don’t like it. It’s dark. I want
to go home.

COLLECTOR
You want me to send you home?

JILLIAN
(with hope)
Yes. And Thomas, and Ely--

COLLECTOR
Why them? Aren’t they always
frighten you with scary stories?
Don’t they deserve to stay here?

JILLIAN
(licks her lips)
No, they are good boys.

COLLECTOR
We love good children! I feel sad,
that you want to leave my place so
soon.
(sighs)
I think, I’ll give you a chance.
I’ll tell you a riddle. And if you
answer it right, you’ll get a
prize.

JILLIAN
I’ll go home?

COLLECTOR
Listen carefully. What comes nearer
as you try to go far away from it?

Jillian thinks hard. She doesn’t want to give a wrong answer. Collector watches her with his unblinking green eyes.

COLLECTOR (CONT’D)
Faster, faster.

JILLIAN
A cheetah?

COLLECTOR
What?!

Collector laughs loudly and slaps his knee in excitement. It seems he’ll choke himself with laughter.

COLLECTOR (CONT’D)
You screwed your chance, Jillian.
Go to your room.

END OF ACT TWO

ACT TREE

FADE IN:

INT. HAUNTED HOSTEL. GIRLS’ BEDROOM - NIGHT

Jillian finds herself in the middle of the room. She’s wearing the pyjamas. Cora, wearing her pyjamas as well, jumps from her bed and greets her excitedly.

CORA
I thought I won’t see you anymore!
What happened?

JILLIAN
Oh, I’m so stupid! He told he’d let
me go home if I answered his
riddle. And I didn’t guess it
right!

CORA
What was the riddle?

JILLIAN
What comes nearer as you try to go
far away from it?

Cora is thinking for a while.

CORA
I don’t know. May be, your shadow?

JILLIAN
We’ll never know. We’ll stay here
forever!

CORA
Well, at least you’re not alone.
They could have locked you for the
whole night in the Black room, or
made you serve at the vampire
party, or--

JILLIAN
Look, Cora!

Jillian stares at the window, her face contorted with terror. The curtains are YELLOW.

JILLIAN (CONT’D)
There’s no way, I’ll sleep in this
room.

CORA
Don’t be such a baby! I’ve slept in
this room for ages. Nothing has
happened. Go to your bed now, or
you’ll get us in trouble. Sandy
Brown is coming to check up on us.

JILLIAN
Who’s Sandy Brown?

CORA
He’s a creepy watchman you don’t
want to mess with.

Cora switches off the light. Girls slip under the blankets. They hear a LOUD KNOCK on the door. The door opens with a creaking sound. We see SANDY BROWN, a scrawny, unkept watchman with yellow eyes, peeping in. He has a flashlight.

Sandy Brown directs the FLASHLIGHT at Cora’s bed, and then at Jillian’s bed. He marks girls present in his book and locks the door. Girls lie in their beds quietly. Jillian dozes off.

INT. JILLIAN’S DREAM - NIGHT

Yellow Curtains sway slowly with the night breeze. They whisper:

YELLOW CURTAINS
Jillian, Jillian, wake up.

Jillian opens her eyes, and says to herself:

JILLIAN
Don’t listen to them. Don’t listen
to them.

YELLOW CURTAINS
Jillian, Jillian, come to the
window.

Jillian stays in her bed. Yellow Curtains stretch, trying to get to her.

YELLOW CURTAINS (CONT’D)
Jillian, Jillian, look at us.

Jillian wakes up and sits on her bed, panting.

INT. GIRLS’ BEDROOM - NIGHT

Jillian looks at Cora’s bed. It’s empty. Scared, she looks behind at the window. She sees that Cora opened the window and wants to climb on the windowsill. Yellow Curtains move.

JILLIAN
Watch out!

Yellow Curtains wrap Cora’s body in a tight grip and shake her with a sinister SWISH.

JILLIAN (CONT’D)
Oh no!

She shuts her eyes with her hands.

JILLIAN (CONT’D)
I should help her, I should help
her.

YELLOW CURTAINS
You’ll be next, Jillian. You’ll be
next.

Jillian makes her mind, she runs to the window and pulls the curtains down. They rustle. Jillian grabs Cora and pulls her inside. Cora falls on the floor, she’s freed from the curtains. The curtains rise and walk to Jillian. She doesn’t move.

JILLIAN
I know the answer. Fear comes
nearer as you try to go far away
from it. You can not run away from
your fear, you must face it.

Out of nowhere an object gets in Jillian’s hand. It looks like a small torch.

JILLIAN (CONT’D)
The prize.

The torch sends a stream of beautiful light, and the curtains back off.

JILLIAN (CONT’D)
The sunbeam.

She directs the sunbeam onto the curtains, they shiver uncomfortably and move back to the window.

The curtains fly through the open window; Jillian comes to the windowsill and follows them with the light. It’s already morning and the yellow curtains move beautifully above the land, heading to the horizon.

JILLIAN (CONT’D)
Look, Cora! They run, they run away
from me!

Jillian looks back into the room, but the room dissolves in the air.

EXT. SMALL LANE - DAY

Jillian stays on the lane few steps away from her house. The sun is shining. Jillian looks at her clothes - she wears her normal dress. SANDRA (35), a jolly woman in her sweat clothes, comes to her front yard, she sees Jillian.

SANDRA
Hi, Jill! How was school today?

JILLIAN
Good.

SANDRA
Have you seen my boys?

JILLIAN
They were at the playground.

SANDRA
It’s OK then. They’ll be home soon.

Jillian smiles. She looks a little bit lost.

JILLIAN
I think, I forgot my backpack in
the park. I’ll go get it.

Jillian runs down the lane.

EXT. SMALL PARK - DAY

Jillian comes close to the fir tree. She opens the branches and looks inside. She sees THREE BACKPACKS. Slowly she lifts her bag.

JILLIAN
They haven’t come back yet.

Jillian hears the CREAKING SOUND. She hesitates for a moment, then turns around and walks to the playground. Cora is swinging in her pyjamas, no one else is around. Jillian walks to Cora.

CORA
Thanks for saving my life. You’re a brave girl. You fought those yellow curtains, and you won.

JILLIAN
I told you, they’d try to kill us.

CORA
Are you happy? You’ve got back home
so soon.

JILLIAN
Thomas and Ely are still there.
(beat)
We should go get them.

CORA
No, they should find their own way.

JILLIAN
Come with me, Cora.

CORA
No. Children need me in Scaryland.
Bye, Jillian.

JILLIAN
Please, tell Thomas and Ely to --

Cora smiles and disappears.

SMALL BOY (O.S.)
Who are you talking to?

Jillian looks down and see a SMALL BOY (6) watching her.

SMALL BOY (CONT’D)
Do you mind if I swing?

Jillian looks around and sees that there are MANY CHILDREN and PARENTS on the playground and in the park. She smiles.

JILLIAN
Sure.
